Kpop groups have made up most of the Korean music industry since the 1990s. more than two dozen kpop groups debut each year, and only some of them make themselves known and famous. Here’s a little information about modern-day kpop and also kpop groups that have debuted/are going to debut in 2021 and those who are already established successful acts.
There’s one thing we’re sure you already know though, and its the fact that kpop groups, with their combination of catchy tunes, impeccably-choreographed videos, intriguing storylines, ever-changing hair colours and attractive members – have already captured the global imagination.
What is ‘ KPOP ‘ ?
Kpop (short for Korean popular music) is a genre of popular music originating in South Korea. It is influenced by styles and genres from around the world, such as experimental, rock, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots. The more modern form of the genre emerged with the formation of one of the earliest K-pop groups, Seo Taiji and Boys, in 1992. Their experimentation with different styles and genres of music and integration of foreign musical elements helped reshape and modernize South Korea’s contemporary music scene.
Modern K-pop “idol” culture began with enormous fandoms of teenagers and young adults from in and outside of South Korea ‘stanning; their favourite kpop groups. After a slump in early K-pop, from 2003 TVXQ and BoA started a new generation of K-pop idols that broke the music genre into the neighboring Japanese market and continue to popularize K-pop internationally today. With the advent of online social networking services and Korean TV shows, the current spread of K-pop and Korean entertainment, known as the Korean Wave, is seen not only in East Asia and Southeast Asia, but also in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Latin America, North Africa, Southern Africa and East Africa, the Middle East and throughout the Western world, gaining a widespread global audience. In August 2014, the prominent British news magazine The Economist dubbed Korean pop culture “Asia’s foremost trendsetter”.
There are approximately 370 active kpop groups at the moment, although the list just keeps on increasing!

With so many kpop groups debuting every month of every year, its hard to keep track of them but believe it or not, some kpop fans obsessively stan and keep up with more than 20 groups! Here are some of the much talked about debuts of 2021 –

And ofcourse, with how popular kpop has gotten all over the world, we have to discuss the the biggest kpop groups of these years. Some of them are BTS, Blackpink, Twice, TXT, NCT, Mamamoo and Red Velvet. Their concept changes with every comeback and some of these groups release atleast 2 full albums each year. Bts, with their streak of breaking every single record possible with every comeback and their sold out stadium tours, national honors, billboard and grammy achievements, is obviously the most successful korean act ever. Although they do not classify as kpop anymore, most people associate kpop with bts.
Blackpink and twice are the two most popular kpop girl groups. They have a dedicated fan base and also break continuous records in and outside of Korea.
The kpop wave may have begun back in 2016, but there seems to be no end to it. The kpop craze seems to be increasing by the year and we have alot of wonderful and talented groups that are working hard for their time to shine. Like every other music industry, it is ever changing and growing, with fresh faces every year, new concepts, and big breakthroughs. Although alot of the usual activities are on hold due to the pandemic, people continue to audition and be put into groups for future kpop bands. The kpop industry is a considerable part of the country’s economy, after all.
