Actor Rajiv Kapoor dies at 58, Neetu Kapoor says 'No Chautha' for Rajiv because of the Pandemic

Rajiv Kapoor (25 August 1962 – 9 February 2021) was an Indian film actor, producer, director, and a member of the Kapoor family. He was the youngest son of the legendary Raj Kapoor. His elder brothers Randhir Kapoor and the late Rishi Kapoor were also Bollywood actors, Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor were his uncles, Prithviraj Kapoor was his paternal grandfather, Raj Kapoor was his father and Trilok Kapoor was his paternal great-uncle.

Bollywood actor Rajiv Kapoor died at 58 on Tuesday, February 9. Sister-in-law Neetu Kapoor posted a photo of the actor on social media and wrote: “RIP.”

Rajiv Kapoor’s career

Rajiv Kapoor, who made his debut in Bollywood with the 1983 film Ek Jaan Hain Hum, was best known for the 1985 blockbuster Ram Teri Ganga Maili. He was last seen in Zimmedaar. He also acted in films like Mera Saathi and Hum To Chale Pardes , among others. The actor, known by the nickname “Chimpu”, turned a film producer with the 1991 film Henna starring Rishi Kapoor. He also backed other home productions like Prem Granth and Aa Ab Laut Chalen.

He was set to make a Bollywood comeback after nearly three decades with Ashutosh Gowariker and Bhushan Kumar’s joint production, a sports drama titled Toolsidas Junior, co-starring Sanjay Dutt.

Rajiv Kapoor’s death : Reason

The Ram Teri Ganga Maili actor suffered a heart attack at his residence in Chembur following which he was rushed to Inlaks Hospital. He was declared dead at the hospital.

Bollywood trade analyst Komal Nahta tweeted that Rajiv Kapoor had died of a heart attack. “Very sad news. Rajiv (Chimpu) Kapoor passes away following heart attack,” he tweeted.

“No Chautha” for Rajiv kapoor due to the Pandemic

“Due to the current pandemic circumstances, there will be no chautha held for the late Mr Rajiv Kapoor for safety reasons,” Neetu Kapoor shared in a family statement.  

A day after Rajiv Kapoor’s death i.e, Tuesday, February 10, Neetu Kapoor shared a family statement on her Instagram to announce that there will not no chautha in memory of the late actor “for safety reasons.” In the statement, Neetu Kapoor said that the Kapoor family have decided to not host a prayer meet keeping the pandemic situation in mind. “Due to the current pandemic circumstances, there will be no chautha held for the late Mr Rajiv Kapoor for safety reasons. “May his soul rest in peace,” Neetu Kapoor added in her post. Addressing fans mourning Rajiv Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor wrote: “The entire Raj Kapoor family is a part of your grief too.”

Kapoor’s nieces Kareena Kapoor-Khan and Karisma Kapoor remembered their uncle with posts on social media. The ‘Jab We Met’ actress shared a black and white picture of the Kapoor brothers, Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv, with their father Raj Kapoor, along with the caption, “Broken but strong”

Karisma, meanwhile, posted an Instagram Story, writing, “Chimpoo uncle you will be dearly missed.”

Twitter reactions on Rajiv Kapoor’s death

Dixit-Nene remembered the ‘wonderful moments’ they shared while working on the film.

A ‘devastated’ Neil Nitin Mukesh called it a ‘another big loss to the family’. Remembering Kapoor as one of his ‘most favourite people in the world’, the ‘New York’ actor tweeted, “Love him so so dearly. Don’t remember a Happy Moment without him. Chimpu uncle we will miss you.”

The news of Kapoor’s demise also left film-maker Boney Kapoor ‘shocked and devastated’. The ‘Mr. India’ director said he had seen Kapoor grow up.

Anupam Kher, who also starred in Kapoor’s ‘Prem Granth’, said that having had the opportunity to work with the director he knew him as a talented film-maker and a warm & happy-go-lucky human being.

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar also took to Twitter to offer condolences.

Actor Akshay Kumar, in a tweet, said, “Saddened to hear about the untimely demise of #RajivKapoor ji. My deepest condolences to the entire family.”

Sanjay Dutt took to the platform to say that he was ‘absolutely heartbroken’ by the news.

The Kapoor family had lost their elder daughter Ritu Nanda in January last year. And in April, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor had passed away after a 2-year fight with cancer.
