Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ created controversy, for hurting the sentiments of the Kamathipura resident. People from Kamathipura hold protest against Alia Bhatt and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Gangubai Kathiawadi, calls it ‘shameful’ and ‘defamatory’.
Alia Bhatt took to her social media handle and released the teaser of her upcoming movie, Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The teaser received both positive and negative response from the critics. Some appreciated the extraordinary acting skills of Alia Bhatt as ‘Gangubai’ in the film whereas others (especially residents of Kamathipura) calls it ‘shameful’ and ‘defamatory’ for hurting the sentiments of their resident. Why Alia Bhatt starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi in trouble?
Soon after the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi teaser, the residents of Mumbai’s Kamathipura area where Gangubai Kathiwadi had lived as the madam of a brothel during the ’60s, hold protest against the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film, for hurting the sentiments of their resident and for defaming them. They have strongly opposed the portrayal of the region as the famous red light area in Mumbai.
A statement read, “The New Alia Bhatt Starrer Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a blatant misrepresentation and an attempt to malign the 200 years of actual history of Kamathipura. It is defamatory, shameful and has hurt the sentiments of the residents of Kamathipura. The residents have worked hard to erase the social stigma attached to the name of Kamathipura, and this movie is extremely damaging to the current and future generations of Kamathipura”.
It further mentioned, “Once again a few people are looking to monetize from the suffering of others and this time the residents of Kamathipura are choosing to not suffer in silence. Hundreds of residents of Kamathipura (Youth, women, children, etc) will be gathering at the center of Kamathipura to protest against the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi. They have also previously met with various decision makers and registered their complaint on the same.”
According to the reports, the protest will be held on March 7, 12 p.m. onwards in Kamathipura resident. Youth, women, children, etc will be gathering at the centre of Kamathipura and will protest against the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi. It further said that the people had taken efforts to ‘erase the social stigma attached to the name of Kamathipura’, but this was ‘extremely damaging’ to the current and future generations’ of the place.
Meanwhile, Gangubai Kathiawadi is all set to release on July 30.
