Vikrant Massey- popularly known as Bablu Pandit from Mirzapur or Aditya Sharma from Criminal Justice. From struggling for roles in TV to a successful Bollywood actor Massey has come a long way. With absolutely great performances in every project, from OTT to mainstream Bollywood films, is he one of the emerging faces of Bollywood?
About Vikrant Massey
Vikrant Massey is an Indian film and television actor. He made his debut on television with Kahaan Hoo Main in 2004. He then had roles in series such as Dharam Veer, Balika Vadhu, Baba Aiso Varr Dhoondo, and Qubool Hai. His debut film was a brief appearance in Lootera, followed by Dil Dhadakne Do and eventually a supporting cast in Half Girlfriend.
He played the protagonist in 2017’s critically acclaimed film A Death In The Gunj directed by Konkana Sen Sharma which earned him a Filmfare Award nomination in the category of Best Actor – Critics. The actor has main roles in the web-series Mirzapur (2018), Criminal Justice (2019) and in the second seasons of Broken But Beautiful, and starred opposite Deepika Padukone in the acid attack survivor film Chhapaak (2020).
Bollywood: A volatile industry
The Hindi film industry is considered very volatile for outsiders. To make space and become popular in Bollywood requires remarkable talent. Vikrant Massey, like Sushant Singh Rajput, is making his way to Bollywood from the television industry. After getting negative feedback for Chhapaak, he was heard saying in an interview, “I was told to my face I am not quintessential hero material.
I am not the good-looking guy with biceps, hearing this broke my spirit. These comments weren’t positive and I took them personally. I was angry, but I used that anger to prove these people wrong. As an actor, I had over 10 years of experience in TV, but that wasn’t counted. You have to start from scratch and you have to adapt as these two are different mediums with different priorities.”
“Unless you are a good actor, you won’t survive. As far as the disparity is concerned, it is tougher for outsiders. Star kids have access to information that we don’t. They don’t have to sit in the sun, they don’t have to audition. Also, the respect you get on set is directly proportional to the length of your role and how important you are to them.”
It’s hard to swallow why Bollywood discriminates with such talented gems. With Vikrant’s recent performances, one can clearly say that he can be one of the emerging faces of Bollywood. Blockbusters- Mirzapur, Criminal Justice and with consecutive great performances, Vikrant Massey has powerfully thrown his hat in the ring of Bollywood’s superstars.

Vikrant Massey’s journey in Bollywood
Vikrant Massey made his Bollywood debut in the film Lootera (2013) which starred Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha in the lead roles. While actors who play main leads, best friend fade away from audiences’ mind soon. It was his talent and determination towards his art which made him a filmmakers’ first choice for essential roles. He then bagged Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, which starred Ranveer Singh, Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma, and Farhan Akhtar in leads. Aamir Khan who was the narrator of the film congratulated him for his brief yet effective role. Next is A Death in The Gunj, he played a Protagonist, which earned him a Filmfare Award nomination in the category of Best Actor – Critics.
Lipstick Under My Burkha, a women-oriented film that most actors could’ve denied. Massey took it over and did justice to the role. Talking about his role in the film he said in an interview- “It is a women-centric film; it talks about the regressive society. I am representing the majoritarian point of view. I took inspiration from my surroundings. There is a certain level of brashness and crudeness in a patriarchal society that I have seen and felt, so representing that wasn’t difficult for me. But yes, to be going against my own ideologies was challenging. That is the beauty of being an actor.” Well, he is a phenomenal actor but is he really giving hits at the box office? According to Box Office India,
As per Box Office statistics, he’s not a part of any superhit or a blockbuster mainstream Bollywood film yet. But he is on his track, choosing challenging and different roles. His work on OTT platforms has been awesome, Mirzapur and Criminal Justice are all-time big hits. He is talented, he is capable, and the audience has started recognizing him.
Considering how he is proving himself with every project he is taking, it won’t be wrong to say he deserves more roles that could do justice to his potential. One of his statements he made in an interview summarizes his journey- “Because I did good work, I have graduated from being the hero’s friend to a hero.”
