KRIS WU Arrested in China
Canadian artist Kris Wu Yifan has been arrested on suspicion of rape, prosecutors in the Beijing state of Chaoyang said in a statement on Monday. The 30-year-old Canadian actor, singer, producer and actor was arrested by Beijing police on July 31 on suspicion of rape and multiple sexual assaults.
Kris Wu, one of China’s biggest stars, is facing a series of sexual harassment allegations from 19-year-old student Du Meizhu.
The prosecutor’s office in Beijing’s Chaoyang district said in a statement that Wu’s arrest was officially sanctioned, but did not provide details about the charges against him.
Kris Wu, 30, previously denied allegations that he had sex with her while she was intoxicated. The allegations led to the release of sympathetic online comments about the youth and criticism of the artist.
The girl said seven women approached her and said that the former member of the Korean boy group EXO was seducing them by promising them jobs and other opportunities. He said some were under the age of 18 but did not indicate whether there were any under-14s, which are years of Chinese consent. Wu was arrested on August 1 while police were investigating in response to his online comments that he had “been attracting young women” to have sex, according to a police statement at the time.
Kris Wu grew up in Guangzhou, China, and Vancouver. Police said he was a Canadian citizen.
