BTS Crowned as IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of 2020, Are they getting a Grammy next?

IFPI’s Global Recording Artist of 2020: The seven-member group had a hugely successful 2020, becoming the first Korean pop act to reach no.1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, with English-language single “Dynamite”, and securing its first major Grammy nomination. They also had several songs top the iTunes chart in more than 100 countries and have the highest number of daesangs (Seoul Music Awards).

And now they they are the first Asian act to be crowned as IFPI’S Global Recording Artist of 2020! Bts did it while being non-western artists with non-English albums, which is practically impossible and a big, respectful feat.

The band, who debuted in 2013 and have fronted the K-Pop drive in the United States in recent years, were also named entertainer of the year by Time magazine.

“BTS are a global phenomenon. They have had another outstanding year, releasing three albums, and continually finding creative and engaging ways to share their story with the world,” IFPI Chief Executive Frances Moore said in a statement. The Global Recording Artist of the Year is an award presented by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry to honor the most popular recording artist based on a total of album-equivalent units, which include music downloads, streaming and physical format sales. So basically, this unique award is calculated according to worldwide performance across digital and physical music formats during the year, from streams to vinyl, and covers their entire body of work.

“They truly show the power that music has to bring joy and happiness to people the world over.”

BTS’s Rankings in previous years of IFPI’s

BTS came close to winning the trade body’s top award in 2018, when they finished second, and again in 2019, coming in seventh. Despite the pandemic, the pop septet slotted into record-setting form last year. In April 2020, the group bowed at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Map of the Soul: 7, their fourth No. 1 in less than two years. Map of the Soul: 7 is one of the most pre-ordered albums of all time, notes the IFPI, and the album ruled the charts in more than 20 countries.

That was just the start of a remarkably successful year for BTS. The Japanese album Map of the Soul : 7 ~ The Journey ~ bolted past 500,000 copies within two days of its release in July 2020. Later bts became the first Korean act to score a Billboard Hot 100 leader as “Dynamite” hit the summit, and busted records for opening-day streams on YouTube and Spotify. “Dynamite” earned a historic Grammy nomination, for best pop duo/group performance. Their korean title track of BE , Life Goes On, also debuted on #1 of the billboard hot 100 chart. Dynamite it still going strong on the charts.

Armys have been looking forward to hearing these results for a long time. They trended several hashtags even before the official announcements, excited when they found out taylor swift ranked second. Army stan Twitter is busy with celebration.
