The 16-year old daughter of former Trump advisor Kellyanne Conway and anti-Trump lawyer George Conway faced the judges of American Idol during the season premiere of the singing competition’s 19th season.
In a voiceover, before her audition started, Claudia talked about how difficult it was to grow up with parents having political connections, specially ones with ex-President Donald Trump. Claudia’s father had come to support her for her audition, and we see him getting emotional at Claudia’s dream coming true. Claudia also talks to her mother, Kellyanne on video call, whom she has a somewhat strained relationship with. Not even 20 days ago, Kellyanne Conway was accused of leaking Claudia’s photos online, and Claudia had opened up about being abused by her mother.
When Claudia entered the stage, judge Katy Perry immediately asked her, “Are you OK?”, to which Claudia replied, “No, but yes,”. She then opened up more about her strained family relations, and about the disagreements that she has with her mother.
Claudia Conway sang Adele’s “When We Were Young”
At first, Claudia decided to sing “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna, but since it didn’t work out, Katy Perry made her switch to her second song, that was Adele’s “When We Were Young”.
“When you sing this next song, think about when you were young, and go back to that time,” Perry told Conway. “And there’s a sadness there, it’s like you lost your youth because you weren’t able to experience it on your own without all of this noise. Your dad’s your dad, your mom’s your mom. Who is Claudia?”
Luckily, this song worked out in her favour, and she got a yes from 2 out of 3 judges, with only Luke Bryan giving her a ‘no’.
“When life is all going downhill, I have my music.” Claudia had said in the voiceover. Claudia Conway had been active on other social media platforms, namely TikTok, since her August 2020 Twitter break, and has quite a following on it.
