After hosting The Ellen DeGeneres Show for more than 19 years, 63-year old Ellen has decided to finally put an end to it. She has confirmed that the show, that has aired since September 2003, will come to an end after its upcoming 19th season. She informed her staff of her decision on May 11 and will sit down with longtime pal Oprah Winfrey to discuss the news on May 13, on her show.
“When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged — and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore,” DeGeneres tells The Hollywood Reporter, discussing the move publicly for the first time.
Ellen admitted that her decision to end the show has been in works for the last few years. “I was going to stop after Season 16,” DeGeneres said. “That was going to be my last season and they wanted to sign for four more years and I said I’d sign for maybe for one.
Why is Ellen ending her show?
Ellen’s decision to finally end the show comes months after a BuzzFeed News article, which accused Ellen of having a toxic workplace. The article had interviews from former workers of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, who claimed that the workplace is toxic, and Ellen’s brand moto of “Be Kind” was just for show. Later that year, Ellen opened season 18 in September with a lengthy apology, telling viewers, “I learned that things happen here that never should have happened. I take that very seriously. And I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected.”
After this, the viewership of the show dropped by 1.1 million people, from 2.6 million viewers to 1.5 million viewers. However, she still hosted all the top celebrities as she had before.
Ellen also revealed in 2018 in an interview with New York Times, that her wife, Portia de Rossi had been encouraging her to put an end to the show, while her comedian brother nudged her to continue on.
Three of the show’s producers had also exited over the summer amid allegations of a dysfunctional workplace that harbored misbehavior, including sexual misconduct and racially insensitive remarks.
