HBO has shared the first-look of the much awaited prequel series of legendary show Game of Thrones, titled, House of the Dragon. This series is one of approximately 72 spin-offs currently in development.

The plot of House of the Dragon

Game of Thrones’ prequel series, House of the Dragon, will take us 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones took place, and will be exploring that history of the brutal Targaryen civil war that tore the realm apart. We will be introduced to a whole new set of characters, many of them Targaryens.

There’s Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II Targaryen, half-siblings who fight for the Iron Throne. There’s the unpredictable Daemon Targaryen, who fights his nephew Aemond Targaryen on dragonback in one of the war’s most exciting episodes. There’s Rhaenys Targaryen, who the smallfolk called the Queen Who Never Was, and so on.

Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony, Hercules) will serve as co-creators on the series. Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will be showrunners, and the pair will also be the executive producers along with Martin, Vince Gerardis, Sara Lee Hess and Ron Schmidt.

Sapochnik, whose directing credits include six Game of Thrones episodes, won Emmy and DGA honors for “Battle of the Bastards.” He was nominated for another Emmy in 2019 for directing “The Long Night” and won the Emmy for Best Drama Series as an executive producer for the final season.

Clare Kilner (The Alienist: Angel of DarknessThe Wedding Date) and Geeta V. Patel (Meet the PatelsThe Witcher) will also direct the series. Greg Yaitanes (BansheeHouse) is director and co-executive producer.

Game of Thrones and Westworld composer Ramin Djawadi will score the series.

The cast of House of the Dragon

The cast of House of the Dragon includes Emma D’Arcy, Matt Smith, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Sonoya Mizuno and Fabien Frankel among others.

Matt Smith will play the role of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys, while Emma D’Arcy, can be seen in character as Viserys’s first-born daughter Rhaenyra. Steve Toussaint will play the role of Lord Corlys Velaryon, also known as the Sea Snake; and Olivia Cooke and Rhys Ifans will be the father and daughter Otto and Alicent Hightower, who live in the Red Keep and serve the Targaryens. Paddy Considine, Fabien Frankel, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno will also feature in the series.

When will the series be released?

According to an announcement by HBO, the series will premire sometime in 2022.

House of the Dragon shooting Location:

The filming of the show is currently taking place in Cornwall, with paparazzi images taken of Smith and D’Arcy shooting on Holywell Beach. St Michael’s Mount, the county’s famous island monastery, is also reportedly a key production location, and there’s a chance that the series will be shot abroad as well.

It’s no secret that the final season of the legendary show, Game of Thrones, was not well received by the fans, as they viewed it as rushed with a lot of holes in the plotline. It was sad to see the downfall of one of the most famous TV Shows ever made, and fans are now curious to see how its prequel is going to be like.
