Of course we’ve seen fast food outlets give free meals on special occasions. But have we ever seen them give away $100k in Bitcoin? We have now, since Chipotle is planning on giving away $100,000 in Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) along with $100,000 worth of burritos in an upcoming contest. Three winners will receive $25,000 in Bitcoin apiece, according to the press release, while the remaining $25,000 will be split 50 ways as $500 Bitcoin prizes. 10,000 contestants will also win free burritos from the fast-casual chain.
“This occasion makes Chipotle the first U.S. restaurant brand to offer a cryptocurrency giveaway to consumers.”, said Chipotle.
Free Burritos or Free Bitcoin?
On Tuesday, the chain announced the new promotion called “Burritos or Bitcoin” that will be valid for one day only, and fans will get an opportunity to try their luck and either win a free burrito or free Bitcoin on National Burrito Day.
Participants will be able to enter six-digit codes to attempt to gain access to one of the digital wallets containing the cryptocurrency awards. The promotion, which Chipotle describes as a “chiptocurrency” contest, is based on programmer Stefan Thomas’s loss of $387 million worth of Bitcoin when he was unable to remember the password to his hard drive and used up the 10 allowed attempts to gain access via IronKey. Thomas is programming Chipotle’s “Burritos or Bitcoin” game — the interface by which contestants try to win one of the Bitcoin rewards, or at least a free burrito.
Till when will this offer be valid?
The offer is valid only for the National Burrito Day, which is on 1st April. The game will go live on April 1 at 9:00 A.M. PT and will end at 6:00 P.M. PT on the same day.
“We’re always looking for unique ways to enhance the celebration, and this year, we’re giving fans the opportunity to acquire two highly valuable assets: burritos or bitcoin.”, said Chipotle Chief Marketing Officer, Chris Brandt
The company added, “If players are unsuccessful in their ten attempts and endure the same fate as Thomas, they may be surprised and delighted with a special offer from Chipotle.”
Overall, 10,000 players will win one free burrito, 50 players will win $500 in bitcoin, and three players will win $25,000 in the cryptocurrency.
No purchase is necessary to participate in the giveaway, which is “Open to legal residents of the 50 U.S./D.C., 18 years of age or older,” the company detailed.
‘Burrito or Bitcoin’: April Fools prank or not?
Many fans were skeptical about this being an April Fool’s prank, but many others are eagerly participating, as Chipotle claimed that they already have more than one million players. Hopefully, this was not a prank, and Chipotle will indeed be giving out Burritos and Bitcoins to the participants.
