International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated each year on March 8, honours the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women from all walks of life, while throwing a spotlight on the daily struggles that women have to face in the environment surrounding them.

History of the International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day has been celebrated for over a century now. However, the IWD was not just randomly decided. It grew out of the labour movement in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. The Socialist Party of America — one of the two major political parties in the country today, declared the first National Woman’s day a year later.
Clara Zetkin, a German woman, was the one who suggested the idea to make this day international in 1910 at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. There were 100 women there, from 17 countries, and they agreed on her suggestion unanimously.
Zetkin was born in 1857 in Germany’s Wiederau and was trained as a teacher. She was a part of both the labour movement and the women’s movement. In the Socialist Party, Zetkin was closely associated with the revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg. In 1910 — three years after she became a co-founder of the International Socialist Women’s Congress — Zetkin proposed at a conference that Women’s Day be celebrated in every country on February 28.
Things were made official in 1975 when the United Nations started celebrating the day.
The Theme of 2021 International Women’s Day
The IWD is celebrated with a theme every year. The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “Choose To Challenge”. A challenging world is an alert world. And from challenge comes change. The challenge highlights the importance of challenging biases, misconceptions, gender-related prejudices, etc to follow the path of gender equality. This year, we can all choose to challenge everything that has been holding us back and become better. “So let’s all #ChooseToChallenge,” read an official statement.
The first theme adopted by the UN (in 1996) was “Celebrating the past, Planning for the Future”.
While celebrating a day specially dedicated to women is wonderful, we should follow the same path of appreciating efforts by women, fighting misconceptions, giving them equal opportunities as men, etc, throughout the year. Maybe then we’ll achieve a society where women are not looked down upon. A very Happy International Women’s Day!
