Despite already being almost 13 years into her career, IU just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Now, she’s officially been crowned the Korean soloist with the most music show wins in history. IU songs are always huge hits, and “Lilac” has been no exception. The retro pop hit recorded over 260 Perfect All-Kills on the Korean charts in just a few weeks, so it’s no surprise it’s been storming music shows too—just like most of IU’s singles. But one of the most important wins of IU’s career came on April 17, when “Lilac” scored its sixth win on MBC‘s Show! Music Core.
IU’s Perfect All-Kills
With 11 wins, “Celebrity” is IU’s most-awarded song on music shows, closely followed by “Palette” and “You&I” with 10 wins each. Meanwhile, “Lilac”, “BbiBbi”, “Good Day”, “The Red Shoes”, and “Blueming” have all received over five wins so far. “Celebrity” had reached No. 1 on the real-time charts of Bugs, Genie, and FLO and grabbed the top spot on Melon’s 24Hits chart. It also soared on global charts, nabbing the first spot on the iTunes Song Chart in six countries, according to her agency, EDAM Entertainment.
“I’ve put extra effort into this song, hoping it will offer encouragement and condolences to my audiences,” IU said through the agency. “Celebrity” is one of the tracks from her fifth album, which she is preparing to release in the coming months.
The singer previously collaborated with BTS’ Suga for a track called “Eight”. The song dominated the itunes chart in 59 countries. The single was a high-profile collaboration between IU and Suga of BTS and had immediately received love as it swept global music charts.
In the music video of ‘Celebrity’, we see IU leading a glamorous life as a celebrity. As she escapes the paparazzi and the cameras, she comes across a girl who looks just like her, sitting in a restaurant. The girl looks sad, and IU finds herself chasing the girl. We see IU sporting absolutely stunning outfits, which honestly took us back to the beautiful and glamorous outfits that she wore in her K-Drama, ‘Hotel Del Luna’!
‘Celebrity’ is a pre-release track for her fifth full-length album. Composed by Ryan S. Jhun, Jeppe London Bilsby, Lauritz Emil Christiansen, IU, Chloe Latimer, and Celine Svanback, the song is of the electronic pop genre with hints of tropical house. The lyrics for the single have been written by IU herself.
LILAC- The multi win track
Along with her other hit tracks one of the most important wins of IU’s career came on April 17, when “Lilac” scored its sixth win on MBC‘s Show! Music Core. Bringing IU’s total count to 85 wins, this finally makes IU the most-awarded soloist on music shows in Korean history. The record was originally held by Kim Gun Mo, who is considered the most successful Korean singer of the 1990s. The male pop and ballad singer holds 84 wins in total, one shy of IU’s new record. Rounding out the rest of the top five, 71-year-old folk-pop and trot singer Cho Yong Pil has 80 wins, former album sale record holder Shin Seung Hun has 74 wins, and worldwide icon PSY has 63 wins. This also makes IU the only female soloist on the top five ranking.
IU, (real name is Lee Ji-Eun), is one of the best-selling soloists in K-pop, an industry dominated by groups. She debuted in 2008 and achieved mainstream success with the 2010 single “Good Day.”
Aside from her music career, IU has also ventured into acting, starring in several television K-dramas such as “Hotel del Luna.”, “Moon Lovers”, “The Producers,” and “My Mister,”
Congratulations to IU for winning first place and triple crown with “LILAC” on SBS’s “Inkigayo”! Second place was Brave Girls’ “Rollin’,” and third place went to BLACKPINK’s Rosé’s “GONE.”
