ONE OF US IS LYING

ONE OF US IS LYING
ONE OF US IS LYING by Karen M. McManus

One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walks out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide. Pay close attention and you might solve this.

“On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app”

All of them have secrets, all of them are suspects. And maybe the real killer isn’t even on that list at all. Definitely a book worth reading!

FIRST LIFE series

FIRST LIFE
FIRST LIFE by Gena Showalter

“I’ve been told history is written by survivors. But I know that isn’t always true. My name is Tenley Lockwood, and very soon, I’ll be dead. This is my story—but the end is only the beginning.”

Tenley “Ten” Lockwood has spent the past thirteen months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. She’s earned her rep as the craziest of crazies, but that doesn’t stop the torture. Ten can leave, but only if she allows her parents to choose where she’ll live—after she dies. There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: First life is merely a dress rehearsal, and real-life begins after death. There are two places a person can go after death, and both of us are hellbent on getting Tenley on their side. This book is thrilling with its amazing world-building vision and the constant strings it pulls.

EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU

EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU
EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU by Celeste Ng

Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.

So begins this exquisite book about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos.

A profoundly moving story of family, secrets, and longing, Everything I Never Told You is both a gripping page-turning book and a sensitive family portrait, uncovering the ways in which mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives, to understand one another.

Really subtle storytelling but the tension built in a really excruciating, smart way that kept me holding my breath. I also love how Ng approached writing the challenges of identity and difference for both women and people of color, as well as how much the burden of expectations can truly weigh.

ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES by Jennifer Niven

The Fault in Our Stars meets Eleanor and Park in this exhilarating and heart-wrenching love story about a girl who learns to live from a boy who intends to die.

And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.

This book will destroy you, and that’s a fact.

THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US

THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US
THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US by Tricia Levenseller

Who’s better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

This book, with its morally grey protagonist, is a brilliant read.

GIRL IN PIECES

GIRL IN PIECES
GIRL IN PIECES by Kathleen Glasgow

Although this book tells a story of people being cruel to themselves, it is a book about being gentle with yourself. It seems odd to call this book kind, as it was often a savage read (it is unflinching in its portrayal of self-harm, homelessness, addiction, and desperation) but it has such a sweetheart, such a piercing desire for its characters to improve themselves in every way, that hope persists in even the darkest moments.

Charlotte Davis is in pieces. At seventeen she’s already lost more than most people lose in a lifetime. But she’s learned how to forget. The broken glass washes away the sorrow until there is nothing but calm.
