Netizens and fans over the world have come together to support Shakira after the singer-songwriter was on the receiving end of some very misogynistic and sexist comments from fans of football clubs
A banner with the term “Shakira a la Jonquera” was held by soccer fans (more specifically PSG fans), which translated to “Shakira to Jonquera”. Jonquera is a town on the border of France & Spain, which is known for prostitutes. The soccer fans here are slut-shaming Shakira by basically referring her to a prostitute.
How Shakira is related to PSG?
Shakira has been in a public relationship with famous Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué, who belongs to FCB club, for over 11 years now, and she has often become victim to similar comments from football fans. Regardless of the result of the matches that Pique plays, Shakira and her children are always dragged into the news and are attacked. Previously as well, fans have shamed her and insulted her, using various degrading terms. Now, something like this has happened again, that too on International Women’s Day, which tells us that we are a long way from getting away from the misogyny of our society.
Shakira has also been attacked and defamed for her past relationship, with claims saying that her first son’s dad was her ex boyfriend, instead of Pique.
Respect Shakira
Over the years, Shakira has not only been targeted by fans of football clubs, but also by the media and press, who have followed her around for the past 7 years.
Today, after the banner insulting the singer got circulated on the internet, Shakira fans and others came together on social media to support her and trended the hashtag #RESPECTSHAKIRA on Twitter. The hashtag is still trending with over 30k tweets.
“It’s 2021 and they still get away with disgustingly sexist comments made on banners, sexist chants aimed at her, etc…It’s a regular occurrence that’s gone on for years. She doesn’t deserve it as does no woman. We shouldn’t stand by and accept her being degraded. #RespectShakira“, one fan wrote.
“Have you won 14 grammys? No. Do you have a star with your name in the walk of fame? No. More important, have you created a foundation that builds schools for poor children? No! So keep Shakira’s name out of your fucking mouth!”, wrote another.
