Sabrina Carpenter’s new song ‘Skin’, a response to ‘Drivers License’

Sabrina Carpenter's new song 'Skin', a response to 'Drivers License'

Only if you haven’t been living under a rock this month, you surely must have heard Olivia Rodrigo’s song ‘Drivers License’. The heartbreak song has gone to break various music records, and made it to Billboard Hot 100 at Number 1! Within three days of its release, it broke Spotify’s record for most streams in a single day for a non-holiday song (15.17m), before reaching 100m streams—the fastest song in the platform’s history to do so. Meanwhile, it went straight to number one on both the UK and US charts and had the biggest opening week of sales since Zayn Malik’s song ‘Pillowtalk’  in 2016, which is a huge achievement for a new artist with no chart history.

Sabrina Carpenter responds to ‘Drivers License’ with her new single

‘Drivers License’ is a song is about heartbreak, and about Olivia still being in love with her former lover; that much we all gathered after listening to the song on repeat. What’s interesting is another new song that has been written and sung by Sabrina Carpenter was released on January 22, and it awfully sounds like it is a response to Olivia’s ‘Drivers License’.

Sabrina refers to someone that she “could have been friends” with if things worked out differently, before then going on to seemingly reference a song about her that includes the fact she’s blonde. Her song ‘Skin’ includes lyrics like, “Maybe you didn’t mean it / Maybe ‘blonde’ was the only rhyme” and “Don’t drive yourself insane.”

Here are the lyrics from the first verse of ‘Skin’.

[Verse 1]
Maybe we could’ve been friends
If I met you in another life

Maybe then we could pretend
There’s no gravity in the words we write
Maybe you didn’t mean it
Maybe “blonde” was the only rhyme
The only rhyme

Fan reactions:

When fans noticed the lyrics of Sabrina Carpenter’s song ‘Skin’, and realized that both the girls are possibly talking about the same boy, they quickly took to social media to share their views. Some called Sabrina ‘Petty’ for hey lyrics in ‘Skin’, some supported her saying that she wrote this song to give her side of the story whereas some fans just dragged Joshua Bassett, the boy that these two girls are supposedly feuding over.

Olivia Rodrigo is a 17-year-old singer and actress who was known for her role in ‘High School Musical: The Series’ as the lead actress, before the success of her song.
