Sridevi (1963-2018) was an Indian film actress who worked in 300 films. Her acting career started in South Indian Cinema at the age of 4, with the Tamil film, Kandan Karunai. She then made her transition to adult roles by the age of 13 with Moondru Mudichu. Due to her immense popularity and pan Indian appeal, she was often cited as the first female superstar of Indian Cinema. She took a sabbatical from film acting in 1997. During her career, she won 6 Filmfare awards: 3 for Hindi films, 2 for Tamil films and 1 for Telugu film. She received the National Film Award for Best Actress for Mom. Sridevi’s last role was a cameo appearance in Zero in 2018.

When did Sridevi die?

Three years ago, on February 24, 2018, news of Sridevi’s unexpected demise came as a rude shock to the fraternity and fans. The actress, who had delivered several top-notch performances at the peak of her Bollywood career, had also made a successful comeback with ‘English Vinglish’, where she stepped into the shoes of homemaker Sashi who sets out to learn English to keep up with the times.

Janhvi and her sister Khushi Kapoor along with their father, Boney Kapoor, performed a puja in honor of Sridevi on Tuesday. Sridevi died in Dubai in 2018. The official cause of death was ruled to be accidental drowning.

Khushi also took to Instagram and shared an old picture of Sridevi and Boney, apparently on a vacation. She didn’t caption the post.

The family remembered Sridevi and a puja was held on Tuesday

On Monday, pictures of Janhvi and Khushi were taken at the Mumbai airport. They were headed to Chennai, where the puja is conducted annually at Sridevi’s house. Khushi couldn’t attend in 2020, as she was in the United States, in college.

The puja was conducted at Sridevi’s Mylapore home on Tuesday. “Wish you were here,” Janhvi had captioned pictures from last year’s puja on Instagram.

During the coronavirus lockdown last year, Janhvi had posted a social media message, in which she’d written about missing her mother. “I’ve learnt that I can still smell my mother in her dressing room,” she wrote.

Janhvi in a 2019 interview with Filmfare had spoken about the Kapoor family coming together in their time of grief. “You know at the end of the day, we have the same blood in us. I don’t remember anything of those four months but I do remember that one day when we were sitting in Harsh (Harshvardhan Kapoor, Anil Kapoor’s son and Janvhi’s cousin) bhaiya’s room and Arjun bhaiya and Anshula didi came in, I think that was the one day when I felt like, ‘Ok maybe we might be okay,” she said.

Sridevi died just months before Janhvi made her acting debut in Dhadak, opposite Ishaan Khatter. She then appeared in Zoya Akhtar’s short in the anthology film Ghost Stories, followed by the biopic of Gunjan Saxena. She will soon be seen in the horror-comedy Roohi, the comedy sequel Dostana 2, and the historical epic Takht.

‘English Vinglish’ director Gauri Shinde: I would have made a film with Sridevi now, and maybe every year!

The Gauri Shinde directorial fetched the actress a lot of rave reviews and several best actress awards. On her death anniversary today, the director, who, too, made her debut with the film, speaks exclusively with ETimes on her experience of working with the actress.

Gauri Shinde said, I’ll never forget my first meeting with Sridevi. It was more like a blind date for both of us because we were meeting for the first time. She didn’t know much about me, other than that I was Balki’s wife. I call it a blind date because we really fell in love with each other. Sometimes you meet certain people, and you feel an instant click. It was that. As if our souls were just meant to meet, and to do something together, however dramatic it may sound. I absolutely love her; I don’t say this because she is a star and I am in awe, but because I really liked her soul.
