Suez Canal best memes: The 400-meter ship (430-yard) long Ever Given that had became jammed diagonally across a southern section of the Suez Canal, and had blocked it for nearly a week, has finally been freed. It had gotten jammed last Tuesday, halting traffic on the shortest shipping route between Europe and Asia. It took a huge operation to free the Suez Canal. Tug boats honked their horns in celebration as the 1,300ft Ever Given was dislodged on Monday.
“Admiral Osama Rabie, the Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), announces the resumption of maritime traffic in the Suez Canal after the Authority successfully rescues and floats the giant Panamanian container ship EVER GIVEN,” a statement from the SCA said.
“She’s free,” an official involved in the salvage operation said.
How much has the blockage cost?
As per the SCA chairman Osama Rabie on Saturday that the Canal’s revenues were taking a massive HIT of $14m-$15m (£10.2m-£10.9m) for each day of the blockage. The reason for HIT was on global trade nearly about 12% of Global Trade, around one million barrels of oil and roughly 8% of liquefied natural gas pass through the canal each day. The Canal connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea through Egypt and is one of the most busiest trade routes in the world.
Traffic of hundreds of ships that are waiting to pass will be resuming in both directions through the canal at 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT), officials say.
