An international sensation, singer, and businesswoman, Rihanna has extended her support to the farmers protesting on the outskirts of Delhi against the centre’s new farm laws. She tweeted a news report by CNN, that condemned the internet shutdown aimed at weakening the movement.
“Why aren’t we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest,” tweeted Rihanna, who has more than 100 million followers on Twitter, along with a news article about the internet blockade.

The Farmer’s Protest
Thousands of protesting farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, have been camping at several Delhi border points for over two months, demanding that that unfair farm laws be taken back, and a legal guarantee on minimum support prices (MSP) for their crops. The laws were enacted in September 2020, and even though eleven rounds of talks between farmers’ unions and the Centre have been held, they all have so far failed to reach an agreement.
The protesting farmers have expressed their fear, that these laws would lead to eliminating the safety cushion of MSP and crumble the wholesale market system (mandi), leaving big corporates to exploit the farmers.
On January 26, as India marked its 72nd Republic Day, a tractor rally was organised by protesting farmers in the capital. The rally ended with a clash between the protestors and the police, and later mobile internet services were suspended in Delhi’s border areas at protest sites, including at Ghazipur border, Singh border, in an attempt to cripple the movement. Seven districts of Haryana have also suspended internet services for mobile.
The farmers’ protest in India has gained attention across the globe.
Other Celebrities have also spoken up for the farmers
Pop Star Rihanna isn’t the first celebrity to raise questions. Several others have also raised questions regarding the situation.
Hollywood actor John Cusack has also shown his support towards the protests and has tweeted multiple times in solidarity with the farmers.
